미국에서 기차사고가 있었습니다.
선진국에서도 자주 일어나는 대형사고는  철도사고가 유일하다시피 합니다.
왜냐면, 도로는 정부가 관리하지만 철도는 민영화된 곳들이 많아서 사고가 끊이지 않습니다.
민영화라고 하는 것이 효율이 좋다고 생각하는데 이 글을 읽어보시고 다시 생각해보세요.

Crashed NY Metro-North train was ´over speed limit´
미국 뉴욕시 브롱크스에서 여객 열차가 탈선해 적어도 4명이 숨지고 67명이 부상했다고 현지 경찰과 소방당국이 밝혔습니다.

괄호 안의 표현은 기차를 꾸며주는 것

부사절로 앞 문장의 내용을 더 풍성하게 설명해주고 있다. 괄호 안에 고유명사가 나오지만 무시하고 기차가 탈선했을 때 로 기본 해석의 가닥을 잡을 것. 

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating whether a mechanical fault or human error led to the train´s high speed.
밑줄 친 부분은 whether 절에서 서술부를 맡고 있다. led to 가 동사이다.
해석은 NTSB가 조사하고 있다 인지 아닌지 기차의 high speed를 이끈 것이

*The train appeared to have been travelling over the speed limit even before it thundered into the curve where it crashed - the speed limit on the track approaching the curve is 70mph, NTSB board member Earl Weener said on Monday.
thundered into 의 해석은 천둥소리를 ~에서 내기 전에 로 해석할 것.

New York Senator Charles Schumer *called the locomotive´s speed "frightening".

5)"The fact that it was going 82mph even before the curve raises so many questions, and it´s scary," Mr Schumer said, adding that the rail line´s tracks and signals appeared to have been 6)in working order at the time of the accident.
과속일 때 선로의 신호와 트랙들은 정상 작동 중이었다.

Mr. Weener said (that) the train had made nine stops prior to the derailment, and officials had not yet uncovered any brake problems.
and  뒷부분에서 흥미로운 표현 not yet 이 보이는데 이 표현은 과거완료를 나타내고 있고, uncovered 는 이 기사 앞부분에 나온 revealed와 같은 뜻이고 discovered로 해석해도 좋다.

He said (that) preliminary data from the train´s event recorders indicated the train´s brakes became fully engaged just five seconds before the locomotive came to a complete stop after the crash. 기초자료에 따르면 기차운행기록들은 보여준다. 브레이크가 충돌 5초전에 제대로 작동했었다. engaged를 operated 라고 해도 상관없음.

Authorities continue to question the train´s engineer and three other crew members, and planned to transport the locomotive to a secure facility for further examination.
계속해서 물었다 혹은 investigated 했다.

Officials were examining the engineer´s mobile phone - a standard procedure, Mr Weener said.

The engineer and assistant conductor were both injured in the crash. Authorities also obtained surveillance video of the derailment from a nearby bridge, but the picture was of low quality, he added.

  동격의 that절로 fact는 that 이하에서 서술되는 되고 있는 것을 말한다. 
6)in working order: 정상적으로 작동하고 있는, 잘 돌아가는 in good condition; working well

직접적인 사고 원인이 나왔군요. “기차는 ~인 것처럼 보였다 / 제한속도 이상으로 운행되고 있었던 것으로.
위의 문장에서 주의하여 볼 것은 본동사 appeared 의 시제가 과거인데, to부정사가 현재완료형인 have p.p와 같이 쓰이고 있다는 것으로, to 부정사가 이처럼 동사원형이 아니라 have p.p를 쓰는 것인, 본동사의 시제보다 이전 일을 나타낼 때 쓰는 표현입니다.. to부정사는 원래 동사원형이 와야하는데, 동사원형이 오면 미래지향적인 뜻을 나타내기에 과거에 있었던 일을 나타내기에는 부적합합니다. 그래서 have p.p를 빌려와서 표현하죠.

4형식 같은 5형식이랄 수 있는 “호격”이 쓰인 문장으로 A를 B라 부르다, 일컫다 등에 쓰이는 Call A B가 나온 것으로 동사 뒤에 명사 2개가 나란히 오면 4형식으로만 생각하기 쉽지만, A=B라는 관계가 성립하여 동사 뒤 문장의 관계는 마치 V2의 N보어처럼 A=B의 동격이지요. 즉, 기관차의 속도를 소름끼칠만한 것이라고 불렀다. 과속을 재미있게 표현하고 있습니다.
