But that’s what we did.  That’s what you did.  You were the change. 

You answered people’s hopes, and because of you, by almost every measure,

America is a better, stronger place than it was when we started.

In ten days, the world will witness a hallmark of our democracy: 

the peaceful transfer of power from one freely-elected president to the next. 

I committed to President-Elect Trump that my administration would ensure the smoothest possible transition, just as President Bush did for me. 

Because it’s up to all of us to make sure our government can help us meet the many challenges we still face.

We have what we need to do so.  After all, we remain the wealthiest, most powerful, and most respected nation on Earth. 

Our youth and drive, our diversity and openness, our boundless capacity for risk and reinvention mean that the future should be ours.

But that potential will be realized only if our democracy works. 

Only if our politics reflects the decency of the our people. 

Only if all of us, regardless of our party affiliation or particular interest, help restore the sense of common purpose that we so badly need right now.

10일 후 세계는 민주주의의 특징을 목격하게 됩니다. 자유로이 선출된 한 대통령으로부터 다음 대통령으로 평화적으로 권력을 이양하는 것. 저는 대통령 당선인 트럼프에게 최선을 다해 부시 대통령이 저를 위해 했던 것과 같이 가능한 한 가장 유연한 이양을 보장할 것입니다.

우리 정부가 우리가 직면한 많은 도전을 해결할 수 있도록 최선을 다하게 하는 것은 우리 모두에게 달린 일이기 때문입니다. 우리는 우리가 해야 할 일이 있습니다. 우리는 이러한 도전 과제를 해결하는 데 필요한 모든 것을 갖추고 있습니다. 결국 우리는 지구 상에서 가장 부유하고 가장 강력하며 존경받는 국가로 남아 있습니다.

우리의 젊음, 우리의 투지, 다양성과 개방성, 위험을 떠안고 재창조를 하려는 우리의 무한한 능력은 미래가 우리 것임을 의미합니다. 그러나 그 잠재력은 민주주의가 작동할 경우에만 실현될 것입니다. 우리의 정치가 우리 국민의 품위를 더 잘 반영할 경우에만, 그리고 우리 모두가 정당에의 가입이나 혹은 특수한 이해에 관계없이 우리가 지금 당장 절실히 필요로 하는 공통의 목표 의식을 회복하는 걸 도울 경우에만 실현될 것입니다.

That’s what I want to focus on tonight ? the state of our democracy.

Understand, democracy does not require uniformity.  Our founders quarreled and compromised, and expected us to do the same. But they knew that democracy does require a basic sense of solidarity ? the idea that for all our outward differences, we are all in this together; that we rise or fall as one.

제가 오늘 밤 강조하고 싶은 것은 우리의 민주주의 국가입니다. 민주주의는 획일성을 요구하지 않는다는 것을 이해하십시오. 우리 창시자들은 논쟁을 벌이고 싸웠고 결국 합의점을 찾았습니다. 그들은 우리가 똑같이 하기를 기대했습니다. 그러나 그들은 민주주의가 기본적인 연대감을 요구한다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그것은 우리의 외견상의 차이에도 불구하고 우리 모두는 함께 모여서 하나로 일어나거나 쓰러질 것이라는 생각입니다.

There have been moments throughout our history that threatened to rupture that solidarity.  The beginning of this century has been one of those times.  A shrinking world, growing inequality; demographic change and the specter of terrorism ? these forces haven’t just tested our security and prosperity, but our democracy as well.  And how we meet these challenges to our democracy will determine our ability to educate our kids, and create good jobs, and protect our homeland.

In other words, it will determine our future.
Our democracy won’t work without a sense that everyone has economic opportunity.

우리 역사를 통해 그 연대를 위협했던 순간들이 있었습니다. 금세기는 그 시대의 시작이었습니다. 움츠러드는 세계, 커지는 불평등, 인구 통계학적 변화와 테러의 공포가 그것입니다. 이 힘들은 우리의 안전과 번영을 시험한 것만이 아니라 민주주의도 시험하고 있습니다. 우리가 이러한 민주주의에 대한 도전에 어떻게 대처하는지가 우리 아이들을 교육하고 좋은 일자리를 창출하고 조국을 보호하는 능력을 결정할 것입니다. 다시 말해 우리의 미래를 결정할 것입니다. 우선 모든 사람이 경제적 기회를 가져야 한다는 인식이 없다면 민주주의는 작동하지 않을 것입니다.
