For 240 years, our nation’s call to citizenship has given work and purpose to each new generation.  It’s what led patriots to choose republic over tyranny, pioneers to trek west,

slaves to brave that makeshift railroad to freedom.  It’s what pulled immigrants and refugees across oceans and the Rio Grande, pushed women to reach for the ballot, powered workers to organize. 

It’s why GIs gave their lives at Omaha Beach and Iwo Jima; Iraq and Afghanistan  and why men and women from Selma to Stonewall were prepared to give theirs as well.

So that’s what we mean when we say America is exceptional.  Not that our nation has been flawless from the start, but that we have shown the capacity to change, and make life better for those who follow.

240년 동안 우리 국민의 시민권에 대한 요청은 새로운 세대마다 임무와 목표를 부여해 왔습니다.

그것은 애국자들이 폭정에 대항해 공화정을 선택하게 이끌었고 개척자들이 서부로 향하게, 노예들이 임시변통한 철도를 타고 자유를 찾을 용기를 갖도록 인도했습니다.

그것은 이민자와 난민이 대양과 리오 그란데 강을 가로질러 오도록 이끌었던 것입니다. 그것은 여성이 투표용지에 손을 뻗치도록 했습니다. 그것은 노동자들이 조직을 결성하도록 힘을 주었습니다. 그것은 군대가 오마하 해변과 이오지마, 이라크와 아프가니스탄에서 목숨을 바친 이유입니다. 그리고 셀마(Selma)에서 스톤 월(Stonewall)까지 남성과 여성들이 그들의 목숨을 던질 준비가 되었던 이유입니다. 

이것이 우리가 미국이 예외적이라고 말할 때 우리가 의미하는 바입니다. 우리 국민들이 처음부터 완벽한 존재였던 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 우리는 변할 수 있는 능력을 보여줬고 우리를 뒤따르는 사람들에게 더 나은 삶을 살도록 했습니다.

Yes, our progress has been uneven.  The work of democracy has always been hard, contentious and sometimes bloody.  For every two steps forward, it often feels we take one step back.  But the long sweep of America has been defined by forward motion, a constant widening of our founding creed to embrace all, and not just some.

If I had told you eight years ago that America would reverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry, and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in our history…if I had told you that we would open up a new chapter with the Cuban people, shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program without firing a shot, and take out the mastermind of 9/11…if I had told you that we would win marriage equality, and secure the right to health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens ? you might have said our sights were set a little too high.

예, 우리의 진전은 고르지 않았습니다. 민주주의의 역사는 항상 어려웠습니다. 논쟁의 여지가 있었습니다. 때로는 피를 흘렸습니다. 앞으로 두 걸음 나아가는 동안 우리는 한 걸음 뒤로 물러서는 느낌을 자주 받습니다. 그러나 긴 시간을 돌이켜보면 미국은 앞으로 움직였으며 일부가 아닌 모두를 껴안겠다는 건국의 이념을 지속적으로 확대했습니다.

만약 8년 전 제가 커다란 경기 침체에서 미국을 구해내고 자동차 산업을 재생시키고 역사상 가장 긴 일자리 창출을 가능하게 할 것이라고 말했다면, 그리고 쿠바 국민에게 새로운 시대를 열어 주고 무력을 사용하지 않고 이란의 핵무기 프로그램을 중단시키고, 9·11의 주동자를 제거하겠다고 말했다면, 만약 우리가 혼인에서의 평등을 얻을 것이고 2000만 시민들의 건강 보험에 대한 권리를 확보하겠다고 말했다면, 이 모든 것을 여러분에게 말했다면 여러분은 우리의 목표가 너무 높게 설정되었다고 했을지도 모릅니다.
