Drug-smuggling ‘super tunnel’ found across US-Mexico border

A sophisticated tunnel used to smuggle drugs between warehouses across the US-Mexico border has been discovered.

Authorities discovered the tunnel, equipped with lighting, ventilation and an electric rail system, (running from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego, yesterday.)

Eight-and-a-half tons of marijuana and 327lbs of cocaine were seized in connection with the raid on one of the most sophisticated secret drug passages ever discovered.

They’ve worked very hard over a year, maybe two years to build a tunnel of this sophistication,’ said Bill Sherman of the Drugs Enforcement Administration (DEA).

‘It’s taken hundreds of thousands of man hours and millions of dollars to complete.’

Three men have been charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to distribute, the DEA said.

They believe a team of architects and engineers would have been needed to build the tunnel which zigzags the length of nearly six football fields.

The area the tunnel is linked to in Mexico is filled with nondescript warehouses, making it easier to conceal trucks being loaded with drugs.

‘This complex underground passageway zig-zags for about a third of a mile under the border at a depth of approximately 35ft on average,’ said Derek Benner of US Immigration and Customs .

The tunnel is the eighth major passage discovered in San Diego since 2006. It is popular with smugglers because its clay-like soil is easy to dig.

추가 문법설명
외국인들이 가장 어려워하는 것이 바로 분사(구문)의 개념인데 사실 이 분사구문의 시작은 관계사와 접속사가 있는 문장을 주절과 종속절의 주어가 같을 때, 동사를 변화시켜 쓰는 형태라고 생각하시면 됩니다. 단, 이때는 현재분사와 과거분사의 개념을 적용하셔야 합니다.
현재분사 Ving 는 능동과 진행을,  과거분사 Ved는 수동과 완료를 나타냅니다. 그래서 주어가 능동적으로 하는 것이면 Ving를 되어지는 수동이면 Ved를 씁니다. 단, 자동사는 수동이 안되니 주의하세요.
