S Korea ferry: Desperate search for survivors continues
Emergency services are continuing to search for almost 300 people missing after a ferry carrying more than 460 people sank off South Korea.
Officials say (that) 179 people have been rescued.
Most of the passengers on board were students and teachers from the same high school on a field trip.

He had water thrown at him as he visited angry relatives gathered at the port of Jindo, near to where ferry capsized, according to the Associated Press.

The US Navy has sent an amphibious assault ship, the USS Bonhomme Richard,
to assist with the search and it is standing by to provide support as requested.

Navy divers have managed to enter three compartments of the ship but have not yet found any bodies.
A coast guard official told Reuters that divers were later prevented from entering the submerged ship for several hours due to strong tides.

At least 325 of the passengers on board the ship were students from Danwon high school in Ansan, near the capital, Seoul.
The students, aged 16 and 17, were heading on a field trip to Jeju island with about 15 teachers.
The ferry sent a distress call at around 09:00 local time (00:00 GMT) on Wednesday after it began to shake and take on water, about 20km (12 miles) off the island of Byungpoong.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has expressed sadness over the incident, saying it was "truly tragic" that students on a field trip were involved in "such an unfortunate accident".
Prime Minister Chung Hong-won had water thrown at him as he visited angry relatives gathered Jindo, according to the Associated Press.

Heartbreaking final text messages sent by those waiting to be rescued from the sinking South Korean ferry emerged tonight.

The messages were shown by authorities after the Sewol, carrying 459 people – mostly secondary school pupils – sank today.
One was from a student who texted his mother: ‘Mom, in case I don’t get the chance to speak to you, I am leaving you this message: I love you.’
His mother, at first not realizing what was happening, replied: ‘Why?’ but then: ‘Me too, son, I love you’.
Another text, apparently sent by a student to a friend, read: ‘I really love you all. I think we really are going to die.’
A third read: ‘Dear everyone, if I’ve done anything wrong please forgive me. I love you.’
As she waited and hoped, another girl texted her father: ‘The ferry’s tilted too much. I can’t move. It would be even more dangerous if I tried.’
He pleaded with her to get outside the ship but she replied: ‘No dad, I can’t get out right now. The ferry’s at too much of an angle to walk.’

More than 280 people were still missing last night, despite an increasingly desperate rescue mission by dozens of ships and helicopters.
At least six people were confirmed dead – including a female crew member and two schoolboys – and 55 injured.
Korean TV stations broadcast live pictures of the Sewol, listing to its side a few kilometres from Byeongpung Island, and sinking as passengers jumped into the water or were winched up by helicopters.
Rescuers clambered over its sides, pulling out passengers wearing life jackets.
One survivor, Lim Hyung-min, said (that) he and other students jumped into the ocean wearing life jackets and then swam to a nearby rescue boat.
‘As the ferry was shaking and tilting, we all tripped and bumped into each another,’ Lim said, adding that some people were bleeding.
He said the ocean ‘was so cold. … I was hurrying, thinking that I wanted to live.’
Fellow passenger Kim Seong-mok said (that) the ferry operator made an announcement asking passengers to wait and not move from their places.
He did not hear any announcement telling passengers to escape.

A parent’s worst nightmare
As news of the tragedy first emerged, parents of children on board the ferry frantically fought to get on coaches / to take them / to the disaster site.

Waiting for information outside the Danwon school in Seoul, the desperate parents piled on to buses to Jindo, with one father, Park Seonh-ho, saying before he left: ‘It is as if the world is falling apart.’
Jeong Kyung-mi, the mother of pupil aged 17, was more fortunate – receiving a text to say her son was safe.
‘When I heard the news, it felt like my heart had stopped beating,’ she said.
Relatives of passengers went to a gym that became a makeshift clinic for survivors to look for their loved ones, as the search was suspended until daybreak.
