I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months,

but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.
저는 리드 대학을 6개월 다니고 자퇴했습니다.

그러나 도강을 하며 학교를 맴돌다가 18개월 후에 정말로 그만두었습니다.

* drop out : 1. (참여하던 것에서) 빠지다[손을 떼다]; (전체에서) 떨어져 나가다
                 2. 중퇴하다
                 3. (체제나 인습 등을) 거부하다
- drop out of school : 중퇴하다
ex) She took my advice and did not drop out of school.
     그녀는 내 조언을 받아들여 학교를 중퇴하지 않았다.

* stay around : (비격식) (어떤 장소에서) 떠나지 [가지] 않다
ex) I´ll stround in case you need me.
     네가 날 필요로 할지도 모르니까 난 안 가고 있을게.

* drop-in : 여기서는 ´도강´의 의미로 사용되었습니다. (뒤에 내용들을 보면 이해할 수 있습니다.)

So why did I drop out?
왜 제가 자퇴를 했을까요?

It started before I was born.
제가 태어나기 전으로 돌아가보겠습니다.

My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student,

and she decided to put me up for adoption.
제 친어머니는 어리셨고, 대학을 졸업한 미혼모였습니다.

그래서 어머니는 절 입양시키기로 했습니다.

* biological mother : 생모, 실모
- biological : 생물학의, 생물체의
- a biological mother : 친어머니
- a biological father : 친아버지
- a biological parent : 친부모
- a biological child : 친자, 실자
ex) No one knows who your biological mother is.
     아무도 네 친엄마가 누군지 모른다.

*unwed : 미혼의, 독신의
- an unwed mother : 미혼모
ex) The number of babies born to unwed mothers continues to increase.
      미혼모 가정에서 태어난 아이가 계속 늘어난다.

* put a person up for adoption : ~를 입양시키다
- put a child up for adoption = offer a child for adoption
  어떤 아이를 양자로 내주다.
- adoption : 입양
ex) The young mother put her child up for adoption.
     그 젊은 엄마는 아이를 입양시켰다.

She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates,

so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.
어머니는 저의 새로운 부모님이 대졸자이길 바라셨고,

제가 태어나면 변호사 남편과 아내의 가정에서 입양하기로 했습니다.

* be adopted : 입양되다
- adopt : 입양하다
- adopt as : ~로서 입양하다.
- adopt out : [어린아이]를 양자로 보내다.
- be adopted into a family : 한 가정에 입양되다
- be adopted into families overseas : 해외가정으로 입양되다.
ex) She was adopted as a baby.
     그녀는 아기 때 입양되었다.

* at birth : 태어났을 때에(는)
- at their birth : 그들의 탄생시에
ex) She weighed one pound at birth.     그 여자는 출생 시 겨우 1파운드(450그램)였습니다.
