오바마 고별 연설1

버락 오바마 미국 대통령이 그의 시카고를 찾아 8년의 임기를 돌아보는 고별연설을 했다.

이날 고별 연설 중 청중들이

“4년 더”를 외치자 오바마는 “그럴 수 없다”며 다만 “미국 시민으로

언제나 여러분 곁에 함께 있겠다”고 말했다.

 My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the

well-wishes we’ve received over the past few weeks.  But tonight it

’s my turn to say thanks.  Whether we’ve seen eye-to-eye or rarely

agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people – in

living rooms and schools; at farms and on factory floors; at diners

and on distant outposts – are what have kept me honest, kept me

inspired, and kept me going.  Every day, I learned from you.  You

made me a better President, and you made me a better man.

저의 동료 국민 여러분, 미셸과 저는 지난 몇 주간 우리가 받은 모든 축복

의 인사에 너무 감동받았습니다. 하지만 오늘 밤은 제가 감사의 인사를 할

차례입니다.

우리가 의견을 같이 했거나 혹은 거의 생각이 일치하지 않았든 미국 국민

여러분과의 대화는, 거실이든 학교든 농장이든 공장 바닥이든, 식당이든

먼 군사 전초 기지이든 이런 대화는 저를 정직하게 해주며 영감을 주었고

제가 계속 전진하도록 했습니다. 그리고 매일 여러분에게서 배웠습니다.

여러분은 저를 더 나은 대통령으로 만들었고 여러분은 저를 더 나은 사람

으로 만들었습니다.

I first came to Chicago when I was in my early twenties, still trying

to figure out who I was; still searching for a purpose to my life. 

It was in neighborhoods not far from here where I began working with

church groups in the shadows of closed steel mills.  It was on these

streets where I witnessed the power of faith, and the quiet dignity

of working people in the face of struggle and loss.  This is where I

learned that change only happens when ordinary people get involved,

get engaged, and come together to demand it.

20대 초반에 시카고에 처음 왔을 때 저는 아직도 제가 누군지 알아내려고

노력했습니다. 아직도 삶의 목적을 찾고 있습니다. 그리고 여기에서 멀지

않은 곳에서 폐쇄된 제철소의 그늘에서 교회 단체와 일하기 시작했습니다.

저는 이 거리에서 투쟁과 상실에 직면한 노동자들의 조용한 위엄과 신앙의

힘을 목격했습니다.

지금 이곳에서 저는 보통 사람들이 개입하고 결연하고 함께 그것을 요구할

때만 변화가 일어난다고 배웠습니다.

After eight years as your President, I still believe that.  And it’s

not just my belief.  It’s the beating heart of our American idea –

our bold experiment in self-government.

여러분의 대통령으로서 8년을 보낸 뒤에도 저는 아직도 그것을 믿습니다.

이것은 저만의 믿음은 아닙니다. 그것은 가슴을 두근거리게 하는 우리 미

국인들의 이상 즉, 스스로를 통치하는 대담한 실험입니다.

It’s the conviction that we are all created equal, endowed by our

Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty,

and the pursuit of happiness.

우리 모두가 평등하게 창조되었고, 창조주에 의해 삶과 자유, 행복 추구

사이에서 어떤 양도할 수 없는 권리를 부여받았다는 확신이 있습니다.

It’s the insistence that these rights, while self-evident, have

never been self-executing; that We, the People, through the

instrument of our democracy, can form a more perfect union.

이러한 권리는 자명하지만 한 번도 저절로 실현된 적은 없습니다. 우리 국

민들은 민주주의의 도구를 이용해 더 완벽한 공동체를 만들 수 있습니다.

This is the great gift our Founders gave us.  The freedom to chase

our individual dreams through our sweat, toil, and imagination – and

the imperative to strive together as well, to achieve a greater good.

얼마나 급진적인 생각입니까. 건국의 시조들이 우리에게 준 위대한 선물입

니다. 우리의 땀과 노력과 상상력으로 각자가 자신만의 꿈을 좇을 수 있는

자유와 그리고 공동의 이익, 더 큰 이익을 성취하기 위해 함께 노력해야

할 필요가 있습니다.
