Boracay closure to start on April 26

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 4) — Boracay´s fate has been decided upon.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the island would be closed for six months starting April 26.
대통령 대변인인 Harry Roque가 보라카이 섬은 4월 26일부터 6개월간 폐쇄 될 것이라고 전했습니다.



Roque added it would be a total closure to tourism.
또한 Roque는 이 기간 동안 모든 관광이 금지 된다고 알렸습니다



The decision came at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday where Roque said the most important item to be discussed was Boracay.
지난 수요일 각료 회의에서도 주요 안건이 보라카이 관련이었다고 Roque는 전했습니다.

The subject of Boracay´s clean up and closure has been a hot topic for weeks, after President Rodrigo Duterte called it a "cesspool."
두테르테 대통령의 “오수구덩이” 발언 이후, 보라카이 폐쇄와 정화문제는 몇 주간 큰 이슈였습니다.



"I will close Boracay. Boracay is a cesspool," he said. "You go into the water, it´s smelly. Smell of what? S**t."

In February, the President ordered Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu to clean up the island in six months.
지난 2월 대통령은 환경부 장관인 Roy Climatu에게 보라카이를 6개월간 정화하라고 지시했습니다.



"There will be a time that no more foreigner will go there because he will have - when he goes back to the plane to where he belongs, he will be full of s**t going back and forth to the restroom," Duterte said.
두테르테 대통령은 이렇게 언급했습니다. “언젠가 더 이상의 외국인들이 보라카이에 가지 않을 날이 있을 겁니다. 왜냐하면 그 사람들이 자신이 있던 평지에 가도 어디에나 쓰레기들이 널려 있으니까요.”



Following the President´s directive, the government inter-agency council has floated the proposal of closing down the island for rehabilitation – a move that Boracay stakeholders have protested.
대통령의 지시에 따라, 정부 관계부처 합동 위원회는 보라카이 이해관계자들이 반대하는 보라카이 섬 정화를 위한 폐쇄 방안을 제시 하였습니다.



Stakeholders argued that a complete shutdown of the island would deprive businessmen and locals of their livelihood and appealed that the shutdown happen in stages.
이해 관계자들은 보라카이를 전면 폐쇄할 경우 기업가와 현지 주민들의 생계에 지장을 줄 것이라고 주장하며 섬 폐쇄가 단계적으로 이루어질 것을 호소했습니다.



Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra said calamity funds would be activated to tide over the thousands of workers affected by the shutdown, but he did not say what the amount would be.

According to the Interior Department, there are more than 17,000 workers stationed on the island.

Part of the rehabilitation period will include going after government officials who could be held accountable for issuing permits to owners even on no-build zones.

The Department of Environment and Natural resources (DENR) said it is now undergoing internal cleansing and may sue its people for graft and corruption.
